IF PAINTING WITH OILS

 • Palette: whatever you’re comfortable with-- wood, paper, etc. I prefer working on glass or plexi, taped to foamcore. 16x20 or larger is a good size.

• Canvas or canvas panels: 2 per day, 11x14 or larger. I like Centurian oil primed linen canvas panels.

• Paints:
Essential: transparent red oxide,
cadmium lemon, alizarin permanent, ultramarine blue, titanium white
Optional: burnt umber, pthalo blue, quinacridone red, black.

• Brushes: I like working with flats with long synthetic flexible bristles, sizes 4, 8 and 12, and a cheap 2" chip brush (you can get these at a hardware store).

• Gamsol or odorless turpenoid for washing brushes and thinning paint.

 • Sealable containers (2 wide-mouth glass jars, cans, etc. with lids).

• Liquin
• Viva paper towels the ones with a smooth surface that feels like cloth.

• Plastic shopping bags for your discarded paper towels.

• Optional: Pharmaceutical gloves and apron.

• Something to carry your wet painting home safely.

IF PAINTING WITH PASTELS

• Paper: Your choice of paper: Sennellier LaCarte, Art Spectrum, Wallis or UArt (you’ll have to tone them), Ampersand Pastelbord, or similar gritty pastel papers -- 2 pieces of middle-tone paper per day (think gray or olive green, not beige or buff and not white).

• For initial drawing: Compressed charcoal or black or brown NuPastel.

• Backboard and clips (Foam core is cheap and lightweight).

• Soft Pastels – Only the chalky kind, not oil pastels. Preferably 60 or more - Schmincke, Unison, Art Spectrum, Terry Ludwig, Grumbacher, etc. https://search.jerrysartarama.com/search?w=soft%20pastels

• Optional: Pharmaceutical gloves and apron.

• Something to carry your finished pastels home safely.
