The Cinque Terre is a rugged portion of the coast on the Italian Riviera. “The Five Lands” comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Paths, trains, and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach them from the outside. For more about the Cinque Terre, the Lonely Planet gives a nice description with photos: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/italy/cinque-terre

We will be taking day trips throughout Cinque Terre’s centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline. We’ll photograph colorful cliffside houses and vineyards clinging to steep terraces; we’ll capture harbors filled with fishing boats, then return to our studio to work from our many photos. Although I am not a plein air painter, we can also try a little plein air work if you’re willing.

Additional Activities:  Our daily painting will be combined with other adventures:

  • A train pass to visit other towns
  • Market day in Vernazza
  • Boat trip to Porto Venere to sketch, shop, have lunch, or a cappuccino in the cafes
  • Free shuttle service from the hotel to the main town
  • Pick up in Florence on the first day; optional return to Florence on the final day

Price: $3,895 p/p based on double occupancy; non-painting partners $3,595

Optional Supplements:

  • $485 for single room – limited availability

Class Supply List:

IF PAINTING WITH OILS

• Travel easel: a lightweight tripod and pochade box, and possibly a collapsable table. I’ll check with Michael to make sure a table will be necessary. Last year we were able to improvise.

• Palette: 12x16 paper palettes travel well. You can insert them into a sealable artist palette seal

• Canvas: 10 Centurian oil primed linen canvas panels or a pad: Your choice: 11x14, 12x16, 16x20 for ease when traveling (those canvas panels can get pretty heavy)

• Clips and foamcore backboard: if you will be working from a pad of canvas

• Paints: We will work with a minimum palette in oils; no need to bring a lot of paint colors. You can make any color with these: transparent red oxide or burnt sienna, burnt umber, cadmium lemon, alizarin permanent or quinacridone red, ultramarine blue or pthalo blue, titanium white. You are absolutely welcome to bring more colors if you want.

• Brushes: I like working with flats with long synthetic flexible bristles, size 4, 8,12, and a 2” chip brush from a hardware store.

• Pharmaceutical gloves and apron
• Stainless steel brush washer * (2 if possible, to pour the next day’s clear solvent into the other)

• Baby Wipes

* Solvent will be available from a hardware store near in Florence.
